Old Kentucky ChocolatesItem: Old Kentucky Chocolates
I was expecting to see a lot of Bourbon and horses when I was visiting the state of Kentucky, but chocolate was not one of the things I associated with this state. A friend of mine insisted that we go see Old Kentucky Chocolates while we were in town, and who can say no to chocolate?
We drove to this store, which contains a candy kitchen, a gift shop, a café and offers free samples. Because we didn’t book ahead for a tour, we were not able to see the kitchen, where the famous candy is made, but it was still great to browse the many delicious-looking items. One of the employees took some time to talk to us, and she said that this company has been in business since 1960, and the most famous items are Bourbon Truffles, Bourbon Cherries, and Kentucky Derby Mints. There are countless gift baskets, and I got to sample with Bourbon Truffles, which I must say may be the best truffle I have ever tasted. I also asked what Kentucky Derby Mints were, and then the employee gave me one to try. It wasn’t what I expected, because I do not like mints at all; these are dark chocolates with just a tiny bit of mint flavour, and are very good. The prices are very reasonable, and there are gift baskets in every price range and assortment you can think of. I saw many items sold by the pound, ranging in price from $15-25, depending on the item. The Bourbon Truffles are sold in 1-5 pound baskets, and range from $18-90, and contain real Jim Beam Bourbon. There are also items like toffee, cakes, specialty sauces, pulled creams, chocolate thoroughbreds which are like Turtles, and many other items. The gift baskets are in horse shapes, and customized baskets can also be made according to your specifications. I ended up purchasing a box of assorted chocolates for $17.95, but I could have spent many more dollars here. It was nice to see something in this area that was different than the themes of bourbon and horses, and I really enjoyed my visit. If you are in the Lexington area, I would recommend a stop at Old Kentucky Chocolates. There are no fees to enter the store or take a tour, but the tours need to be booked in advance.
