Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCiItem: Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi
Ford is an extremely successful car maker, and one reason for that is its Mondeo range. I have a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, which is a diesel-powered model, in estate car form, and have mostly been very pleased. It is quite easy to see why this car has sold so well over the years.
It is quite a large car by European standards, and a family of four will find a lot of room. I was particularly pleased with the amount of legroom in the rear seats: two six-foot adults could sit there in comfort even for a journey of several hundred miles. The trim is a little dull, and the ride perhaps on the hard side of comfortable, but it is very acceptable. There is not too much noise from the engine, though more than there would be from a similar petrol car. This Mondeo is a very good car to drive, especially by the standards of diesel cars. It has a lot of torque at low speeds, meaning it can pull effortlessly away from junctions and traffic lights. It also has excellent handling, with the driver able to feel confident about where he or she has positioned the car on the road; this makes cornering, in particular, a less stressful undertaking. The two-litre engine is not huge, but is large enough to pull the car along quite well on faster roads. I have been quite pleased with the fuel economy. Although the Mondeo has not matched Ford’s advertised figures of over 50 miles per gallon, it is not difficult to get well into the 40s even without using cruise control. The large fuel tank means that long journeys can be undertaken simply without having to make many stops, which is something I was also pleased with. I have not discovered any major flaws with this car so far. It is large, roomy, nice to drive and reasonably economical. As such, I would recommend that anyone looking for a big estate car for a growing family take a long and hard look at this Mondeo. Rating: 8
