In this provocative books in the Ella Clah series, former FBI agent and single Navaho mother, experiences a NDE, or near death experience. When her nephew falls into an abandoned mineshaft, Ella rescues him. While doing so, she is buried under the collapsing mine walls and is declared dead. When she suddenly stands up and returns to life, she is declared one of the chindi, or the dead by many members of the Navaho tribe. While trying do find a haatali to perform a sing over her to purify her, Ella is force to track down the murderer of an influential Navaho Council member’s wife. This is made more difficult because Ella has become persona non gratis among many members of the Navaho tribe. She is force to walk a narrow tenuous path between the traditional Navahos who view her as a taboo, the people who try to kill her and the members of the press who want to interview her and possible make a made-for-television movie. With all of the distractions in her public life, Ella must end her relationship with Harry and must find some way to spend more quality time with her daughter dawn who is growing faster than Ella ever thought possible. I very much like this series of books and find this “episode” in her life to appeal to all of my emotions: sadness, happiness, fear, loneliness, confidence, doubt and a host of others. I recommend both this book and this mystery series. Rating: 8
