Tesco Strawberry Crisp CerealItem: Tesco Strawberry Crisp Cereal
Wishing to try a new type of cereal, I browsed the shelves of our local supermarket, and this one jumped out at me because of its packaging. It’s in a nice, cream coloured box with a photo of a bowl of strawberry crisp cereal, and along the top of the box is another photo of fresh strawberries.
The bowl of cereal looks appetising, crunchy and full of goodness, and the strawberries across the top appear succulent, juicy and fresh. This box held the promise of a very exciting cereal, and one that is fruity and just right for the current period of nice weather, and the promise of summer coming soon. The writing on the box says that the cereal is a good source of fibre, and has a lot salt content, which are both good things. When I got home I was eager to try it, and was hoping that it would live up to the attractive images on the box. Pouring myself a generous bowl of cereal and milk, I was happy to smell the sweet aroma of strawberries. They are obviously dried strawberries, as the fresh fruit wouldn’t last long enough. Although the box might be a bit misleading for some people because of the fresh strawberry image at the top, as well as the fact that some of the strawberries in the bowl on the front are fresh rather than dried. Tesco get away with this representation by including the small words “serving suggestion” in the bottom right-hand corner. They are obviously suggesting that you could add your own, fresh strawberries if you wished to. But I think that there is no real need to include fresh strawberries in this picture. In my opinion, a more honest photo would be better, less confusing and make the product look just as attractive. The cereal itself is lovely. I was very happy with the crunchiness of the cereal clusters (including oat flakes, puffed rice, wheat flour, honey and glucose syrup) and the tangy freeze dried strawberry pieces. They were a nice compliment to eachother. This product has a lovely fresh, summery flavour, just as the photos on the box promise. Other than the slightly misleading box picture, my other reservation with cereal is that it seems to contain artificial flavouring. After the natural ingredients, it just lists ‘Flavouring’, without specifying what this flavouring is, which led me to my assumption that they’re possibly less than natural. I could be wrong about this, but there is nothing to suggest otherwise. I feel that a cereal that looks so healthy, and has obviously been marketed this way, shouldn’t contain something that’s possibley not so healthy. And it’s wrong of the manufacturers to hide from us what it is. I would definitely recommend this cereal to somebody looking for an exciting, fresh way to start the day. This cereal really helps me to get out of bed in the morning, as I look forward to eating it! Despite my slight reservations I would rate it quite highly. On the whole it feels as if I’m eating healthily, (although I would like to know what the flavouring is…) and healthy and delicious is a good combination. Rating: 7
