Early last year, my father was complaining of severe cough. He said it started when he was exposed to smoke from a public utility vehicle. The cough is the productive kind and even with the use of Robitussin, it does not improve. He went to see a doctor and the doctor said that it was allergic rhinitis and was given some other medication. Still, his condition did not improve. He began experiencing night sweats and is becoming feverish in late afternoons. Then he is often not in the mood to eat, thus he is loosing weight. With the appearance of these new symptoms, we became really worried because my father seem to be deteriorating. He consulted another physician. This time, he was subjected to more thorough set of tests including chest x-ray and sputum test.
The chest xray showed show an abnormality in the mid and lower lung fields and the sputum test revealed presence of myobacteria. All of which are indicative of positive Pulmonary Tuberculosis. The doctor educated both my mother and father about the risk of spreading the condition. They were advised to separate eating utensils used by my father, using gas masks when going out in the public and other precautionary measures. Then FIXCOM 4 was prescribed. Fixcom4 is consist of four pills including 150 mg of Rifampicin, 75mg of Isoniazid, 400 mg of Pyrazinamide and 275 mg of Ethambutol. He was given directions to take the said medications. Most of which he is taking before breakfast. The said medications must be taken religiously for 6 months. These medications are very pricey. It made us think, what a pity it is for people who cannot afford it. It cost almost a thousand PhP for 2 and a half month supply.
