Killzone 2 (PS3)Item: Killzone 2 (PS3)
Killzone 2 has been in the list of the most wanted PS3 games ever since its announcement few years ago. This is partly due to its amazing graphic engine which managed to “wow” a lot of gaming fans in the world. Few years later, in February 2009, the game was finally released and I was one of the first few person in my country who managed to get my hands on it.
The version which I bought is the Region 3 version or the Asia version, and it costs me around RM 180, which is USD$ 50. The user manual is pretty normal since it explains about the key mappings and brief story about the game and its game modes. Upon starting the game, you’ll be greeted by a nice but slightly lengthy movie cut-scenes using the in-game engine. The graphic engine is truly magnificent and has to be the best looking game on any gaming console to date. The textures of the character model and also the world itself are been designed and constructed beautifully. At first look, you won’t be able to differentiate the computer graphics from the real people you see in a typical Hollywood movie. Even my parents who are not gaming freaks were shocked when they first saw me playing with the game. After watching the opening cut-scene, I finally entered the game and it’s amazing. The movie cut-scene is using the same graphic engine as the in-game, it’s not pre-rendered like many other games do. The realistic graphic in the movie can be found everywhere inside the game. That aside, the game play is very addictive and engaging. The AI enemies are pretty smart too since they know how to hide behind cover and how to rush in from both sides or to force you out with grenades. The boss fights are pretty classic too. You don’t get ridiculously huge bosses, but that does not mean the boss fights are very simple. Each boss has its own strengths and weaknesses. You will need to spend some time studying their movement and behavior before knowing how to tackle them with your weapons. Besides that, the weapons in this game are also very nice and have that kind of “feel”, the same thing which I’ve experienced in Call of Duty 4 but somehow lacking in Resistance 2. Most of the weapons are typical weapons such as rifles, machine guns, shotguns, etc. But the highlight of the single player mode has to be the dynamic environment and the physics engine. Whenever you toss a grenade, you will notice that some parts of the building will fall and sometimes you can even make your enemy falls by shooting at the ground below him. It is really that dynamic. It’s not like the typical shooter where the wall of a building has no effect even after you used a rocket launcher on it. However, bear in mind that not all buildings behave that way since it does not make any sense if the game allows you to simply blast things off. This feature is more like eye-candy and so-called add-on to the overall gaming experience. Overall, the single player mode is pretty short as it only lasts around 8 to 10 hours of game play. Once you are done with it, you can head into multiplayer mode. You can either set up bots or AI players to fight against you in a multiplayer match or you can join the Killzone Warzone to play with other people. I’m a member of a local Killzone 2 Clan and we have regular matches with other clans every now and then. I must warn you though that the multiplayer can be quite addictive since it provides a very good career progression mode and also offering many different weapon types. There are also few classes available such as the Medic, Engineer, Assault, Saboteur, Scout and General. Each of them has its own special skill. For example, a Saboteur can run very fast and can disguise himself in enemy’s color while the Scout can go invisible. Conclusion, I really enjoy this game and it has to be one of the best PS3 game ever, especially for a first person shooter. When I played Call of Duty 4 and Resistance 2, I thought those 2 were the best shooters for PS3. I was wrong. Killzone 2 is by far the better shooter than those 2. I highly recommend this game to any shooter fan out there. Rating: 9
