This is my all-time favorite pizza from Rocky Rococo. Every day Rocky Rococo has a different pizza served on a different day, called the Slice of the Day. Uncle Sal’s Spectacular is served on Mondays. If I am downtown on Monday during the lunch hour, I will always stop off at Rocky’s to get a slice of this delicious, mouth-watering pizza. I should add that this pizza is only available in the Super Slice, not the Regular Slice. The Super Slice is much larger and is squarer in shape while the Regular Slice is more of a rectangle.

I love Uncle Sal’s Spectacular for all of the yummy vegetables on it, mainly the huge hunks of red tomato. Ever since I was a small child I have loved tomatoes and eating a slice of this pizza helps fill that craving. The tomato chunks are large, tender and full of that good tomato flavor that I love. This is also the only pizza I have ever found that actually had actual tomato chunks on it. Other vegetables include slices of onion and mushrooms. The onion often comes in long strips you can actually see, not little bits that are all diced up and invisible. They add extra zest to a mouthful when I eat a slice that contains onion. The mushrooms are great, too, dark and tender.

This pizza also has tangy Italian Sausage on it as well. Each Super Slice contains six large Italian Sausage meatballs. I can actually see the spices and the spice seeds on these meatballs. I call them ‘meatballs’ because they are slightly roundish (but flat on the top and bottom) in shape and they are rather large - slightly larger than a US quarter. I also appreciate that Rocky Rococo makes fresh ‘meatballs’ by hand each and every day so that I know the meat is fresh. They are very zesty but not hot - no red peppers here. It also contains slices of pepperoni but they are often hidden under the meatballs or the tomatoes. Look and you will see them!

Uncle Sal’s Spectacular also has a thick layer of delicious Wisconsin cheese. The cheese on this pizza is white so I believe its Mozzarella. All the other ingredients - Italian meatballs, pepperoni, onions, tomato chunks and mushrooms - are arranged on top of the cheese and then sprinkled with a generous helping of tiny green leaves (parsley I think). The crust is tender and soft, much like a slice of bread. Together it tastes very delicious and tangy. The taste also changes slightly due to what is on the piece I stick in my mouth. For example, if the piece I stick into my mouth is mostly cheese than the cheese flavor comes through very clearly.

The Super Slice is served inside a cardboard box that has a flip-top lid. The sides also fold out somewhat. The edge of the lid has a little flap that inserts into a slit so the box stays closed until you are ready to eat your pizza. I like this as it helps keep the pizza warm while I eat my breadsticks. The Super Slice comes inside a box with a white background (and the Regular Slice comes in a box with a tan background).

The pizza is always served hot as they keep it hot on a heated metal shelf right next to the kitchen. I’ve seen the worker in the kitchen pull a freshly baked pizza out of the oven, slice it, place each slice into a box, fold the box up and place it onto the metal shelf countless times. I know the pizza is always fresh so I don’t have to worry about getting sick from food that has sat a long time. Never once did I receive cold pizza or have gotten ill from eating at Rocky’s.

I like eating this pizza with the plastic knife and fork that Rocky always provides. You may think this sounds a bit crazy but it works very well this way. The pizza is easy to slice and I keep my hands clean. Stabbing a mouth-sized bit of pizza with the fork is easy. I can also use the fork to easily scoop up bits of mushrooms or tomato that fell off the pizza. Of course, they provide paper napkins with each meal.

You can order the Super Slice either by itself or part of a combo meal. The combo meal includes a medium soda and breadsticks. If you don’t want breadsticks you can choose a salad. There is usually a coupon for the Super Slice in the coupon books that Rocky hands out with most meals.
