Until I began watching Stargate SG-1, I really wasn’t aware of Don S. Davis. I certainly didn’t know his name, though I had seen him before without knowing who he was. However, once I became an SG-1 fan, I quickly learned to appreciate the talents of Don S. Davis, who starred as General George Hammond on the series.

However, my appreciation for Don really jumped when I met him in my hometown. He was here, appearing with Michael Shanks and others, at a convention. As luck would have it, he actually sat down and ate brunch with my group at our table. What a surprising treat that was.

Don was friendly and warm. He answered questions and told stories. He was just a delight. I remember him talking about Richard Dean Anderson, who had just left the show so that he could spend some quality time with his young daughter. Don talked about how much Rick loved his daughter and doted on her. At the time, not all fans understood Rick’s decision, and Don seemed to be defending Rick, though we were all for it. It was hard to lose Rick as a performer, but his reasons were the most heartfelt.

I also clearly recall us talking about Michael Shanks and his career. In fact, I actually had two conversations about this with Don. He cared so much for Michael; the two were great friends. He believed in Michael’s acting ability and wanted him to break out of the sci fi genre and get the recognition he deserved. We actually discussed the need for Michael to leave his Canadian home and move closer to the heart of Hollywood in order to make that happen.

Later in the day, some of us ran into Don in the lobby and we talked some more, this time mostly about his artwork. He was so talented and enjoyed that passion greatly.

More than his fine acting, more than General Hammond, when I think about Don S. Davis, I remember the warmth he exuded and the kindness he gave to us, his fans. It’s rare to meet a celebrity so genuine and open as Don was with us. I’ll never forget him.

Don passed away in 2008. It was a huge shock, but the man will be remembered, by his family, his friends, and his fans, of which I’m proud to be one.
