The Panasonic Auto Stop Automatic Pencil Sharpener Model KP-150 is an upright style pencil sharpener designed to handle standard size pencils. The sharpener will not take extra fat pencils such as those that are sometimes used in pre-schools or kindergartens. The sharpener stands upright and is designed to be used on a desktop or table top.
The sharpener itself does not work all that well. The blades do sharpen pencils adequately but the auto stop feature is not terribly well implemented. Many times the sharpener will continue to chew away at the pencil long after it is already sharp and if you aren’t careful it is possible to end up with nothing but a pencil stub in very short order. In addition the guide system for inserting the pencil does not work very well. Because the guide system is tied to the trigger mechanism for starting the sharpening action, sometimes the pencil sharpener does not engage when the pencil is inserted. It may take several attempts to get the pencil to work before sharpening actually begins. This can be particularly frustrating when trying to sharpen a large batch of pencils such as before giving a class. One good thing about the sharpener is that the motor is quite durable. After sharpening many dozens of pencils the motor has continued to work well and it continues to sharpen pencils as well now as it did when first purchased. This makes it a decent sharpener because you won’t have to go out and replace it a few weeks after purchase. Overall it is certainly not the best sharpener on the market but it isn’t a rip-off either. Rating: 5
