Sutton Place Hotel, VancouverItem: Sutton Place Hotel
My wife and I were fortunate enough to stay in the Sutton Place hotel in Vancouver for two nights as part of our honeymoon in July. We were staying here on a pre-cruise city break before an Alaskan cruise with Princess.
The exterior of the hotel, like much of Vancouver, is starting to show its age, and appears in need of a lick of paint to bring it in line with more modern cities like Toronto - but inside, it is clear that the hotel looks as fresh as ever. The staff (from the doormen, to the front desk staff, to the restaurant staff) were impeccable. Always helpful, patient and willing to help you out with any problems. There was also a Princess representative available in the hotel to talk to who made sure we received our cruise package. Our room, which was more like an apartment, had 2 double bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, ensuite bathroom and a balcony. The decor was very modern and the 2 huge flat screen TVs in the living room and bedroom were clearly very new. On our first night, we ate in the hotel restaurant. It was very expensive for us, at more than $100 per head, but hey, it was our honeymoon. We’re only going to do this once, right? We eat out quite regularly, but I have to say, my wife and I consider this to be possibly the best dining out experience we’ve ever had. A pianist played softly in the corner of the restaurant, accompanying the mood, never drowning out the conversation, and always happy to take requests. I can’t remember what my wife ate (it wasn’t on her plate for long!), but I had the trio of duck and the pork steak with vegetables. It was absolutely delicious. Even though we declined a dessert, our waiter still brought us some small chocolate treats free of charge. We also ate a buffet breakfast both mornings in the hotel restaurant. That too was expensive for breakfast, almost $20 per head. But there was a huge amount of choice - from the usual bacon/egg/sausage/hash browns to cereal/toast/pastries/fresh fruit. Everything we tried was superb, and the table service always efficient and friendly. We left the Sutton Place wishing we could stay longer, it was a great experience, and a lovely start to our honeymoon. Everything here was much grander/bigger/better than we imagined it would be! Take a look at the website http://www.vancouver.suttonplace.com/ - there are some beautiful photos of the hotel on here, and they give a really good picture of what the hotel is like! ( I rated this a 9 because I don’t think anything ever deserves a 10. There’s always room for improvement!) - Migraine Boy, England Rating: 9
