Mean Girls movieItem: Mean Girls
If there was any movie that made Lindsay Lohan the celebrity she is now, Mean Girls would be it. As Cady, the smart-yet-uncool new girl from Africa who made the fearless journey from homeschooling to the uncharted territories of the American high school safari, Lohan appeared quite the convincing package of baggy clothes and clueless charm. Her accidental encounter with the reigning queens of the school, and her inevitable crush on the star athlete of varying degrees of cuteness, launched her into the danger zone of the academic jungle - the exclusive area ruled by the Mean Girls.
The story pretty much showed typical high-school-movie sensibilities: smart girl meets smart kids, gets pulled into the wrong crowd, harbors a strong desire for the campus hottie, and learns her lessons soon enough. I thought, sure, another copy of teen classics Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles, but the over-the-top portrayals of the characters made me change my mind. First off, they introduced a new language - from ‘fugly’ to ‘fetch’ and everything in between - and showed a queen bee who was actually nice. Well, at least in public. Regina George, fabulously played by Rachel McAdams, is probably the only protagonist I’ve seen who didn’t appear like she was about to eat someone alive. Overall, this movie was a blast! I’ve seen it five times, and will watch it whenever I want to just sit and laugh and not be overly involved in a film. It is hilarious, fabulous, and definitely not fugly. Rating: 8
