The Kootenai River runs along side the town in slow moving splendor wide enough for everyone in the area to have their own private fishing and swimming secret. It is surrounded by forest and wild life, making you feel like you have been dropped back in the days of the frontier. If you plan to fish the river be sure you get your proper fishing license in town and make sure you have a good test line. The fish run mighty in this river!

If you are looking for hermit home land this is the place. With enough land to get lost in you can hide from civilization for as long as you like, but beware of the winters. They are rough in this region so prepare if you plan to stay in the backwoods for the season. Have plenty of wood for heat and food to eat. The hunting is incredible and so is the fishing so you won’t run low on meat.

You can even try your hand at white water rafting and then visit my favorite fun place the Kootenai Tribe Sturgeon fish hatchery. It is so fun to just look around at the Sturgeon’s in various sizes that will be released back to the wild waters of the north. You’ll get a chance to know how our rivers in this area are stocked and you’ll be surprised at the size of the fish. This isn’t your little frying pan size catch. This one will take a while to so have a freezer ready.

Now for a little surprise of the north is the Kootenai River Inn and Casino! Good food as you sit at the table and watch the river just below flow by. I couldn’t get over how good it felt to be so close to the water and yet have so much fun inside. With many, many slot machines, games and cost to choose from you’ll enjoy staying for a few weeks in the summer. The rooms are great and the food good. The fun inside is great and you only have to step outside to breath in fresh mountain air. Have fun and enjoy the great outdoors and profitable indoors in Bonners Ferry, Idaho!
