The Shape Shifter by Tony HillermanItem: Book “The Shape Shifter” by Tony Hillerman
The most recent book in his Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee series is “The Shape Shifter” (2006). It is a fine example of the genre Hillerman created.
The story finds Joe Leaphorn, recently retired, given one last chance to solve a crime from his early days as a patrolman for the Navaho Police Department. Leaphorn is joined in his efforts by a number of other recent retirees in the area who find themselves with too much time and too little to do. The partnership between Chee and Leaphorn still exists, but it is tenuous as the once silent, loner, Jim Chee has now married his co-worker and it appears the series is coming to an end. Naturally in the end Leaphorn solves the mystery and makes peace with a tribal elder who had held a grudge against him for his entire career. What a treat to have a new Leaphorn novel after a two-year wait. Hopefully Hillerman has another one in him. I rate this book an A or 93%. Rating: 9

Why did you have the three amigos burry Delos instead of bringing his body to the authorities and reveal the whole truth, especially in that it would reveal the truth about the murder of Bork. This is the first book of yours I have read and now plan to go back and read others written first. The land descriptions and details about the religions or ways of life are fascinating. I raised Vietnamese children and saw a lot of Tommy in them. Marlene in NH
