Atrovent is the common name for Ipratropium. It is used to help those with a chronic runny nose, or stuffy nose, sneezing or post nasal drip. This nose spray should not be used by children under 6 years old. Atrovent works by limiting the amount of mucus the glands in your nose creates. How to use Atrovent: First you will need to prime the pump. Point the bottle away from your face, take the dust cap off. Hold your thumb on the bottom of the bottle, and your fingers on either side of the pump sprayer. Pump 7 times for the first time you prime it. If you don’t use it for 24 hours, you will have to prime it again. If 7 pumps don’t bring the spray up, pump until a mist appears. Blow your nose before gently putting the spray tip in your nostril. Point the tip toward the back and the side of your nostril. Hold your finger over the other nostril and spray and sniff simultaniously. Repeat the same way in the other nostril. After spraying, breathe out through your mouth. Drink some water or liquid of your choice to reduce the chace of irritated throat or the bad taste in the mouth. You should use this the same time each day. The dosage varies according to the patient’s needs, but normally it is prescribed 2 sprays in each nostril 3 times per day. There are some side effects to using Atrovent Nasal spray. The following list are some of them: bloody nose, dry nose, dry mouth, irritated throat, dizzy or nausea. Let your doctor know if you have any of these side effects. If by chance you begin to have a fast heartbeat, your vision changes, have pain in the eye or trouble going to the bathroom, call your doctor. Allergies can also occur. The symptoms of allergy would be rash, itch, swelling,or trouble breathing. They do not know if Atrovent is passed through breast milk. Consult your doctor if you are nursing or become pregnant.
