Prevacid Solutabs

Item: Prevacid Solutabs
Location:

I did a review on Prevacid Acid Reducer medication the other day, but I also want to do this review on the Prevacid Solutabs. The Solutabs are different in that they can be taken through an oral syringe or an NG tube, where as the tablets are taken orally and with water to wash it down.
The Prevacid Solutabs are also known as Lansoprazole. It is a proton pump inhibitor. In other words, it stops the acid producers in your stomach from pumping the acid which causes heartburn and acid indigestion. Prevacid Solutabs treat ulcers and GERD. (Gastroesophageal reflux.) It CAN be used in conjunction with antibiotics if needed.
This is how you take this Solutab: You place it on your tongue and let it sit until it breaks into pieces. This happens pretty quickly. The instructions specify NOT to chew or crush, so, you just start swallowing the pieces. I don’t know what happens if you chew or crush, but it says not to, so don’t.
If you need to use the oral syringe, the tablet goes into the syringe, then you add water. The amount of water depends on the strength of the tablet. If it is a 15 mg tablet, use 4ml of water drawn into the syringe.
If you use the NG tube, simply follow the instructions the same as with the syringe but insert it into the NG tube instead of the mouth.
Even if you start feeling better, you should NOT discontinue this medication. The reason you are feeling better is because you are taking the medication. :)
If you are a woman and are considering getting pregnant, discuss this medication with your doctor. Do not use this medication is you are breast feeding because they do not know yet if it is excreted in breast milk and could be dangerous to your infant.
There are some slight side effects for some people. Report to your doctor if you experience constipation or diarreah. And, if you start having stomach pain, you are to see your doctor immediately. This could be a sign of something much more serious. Some people might get a rash, have itching, swelling, dizziness or trouble breathing, but that is very rare. If you DO have any of those problems, stop taking the drug immediately and see your doctor. Those signs are more likely to be an allergic reaction rather than a side effect.
Prevacid Solutabs are expensive without insurance. They cost a nice $94.62 at Wal Mart of a packet of 30 tablets.
I give the Solutabs a 9.
