I have been a student at Humboldt State University for the past year, and I could not have been happier with my college choice. Humboldt is a college of about 7,000 students in Arcata, Humboldt County, California. It offers 49 majors and has special strengths in natural resources, engineering, and art.
The thing that I like best about Humboldt is the location. The campus is located at the edge of a redwood forest in Arcata, population 15,000. The surrounding area is great for everything related to the outdoors. I go running and mountain biking in the community forest which is a one-minute walk from my dorm room. I’ve also gone rock climbing, sailing, hiking, kayaking, and canoeing on the many lagoons that can be found up the coast. The beach is just a 15-minute drive from campus. In the Trinity Alps I can explore the snow in the winter and go whitewater rafting in the summer.
Academics at Humboldt are possibly the best in the CSU system. Most classes are small, and labs in the science classes are great. The teachers all seem like they really love what they are teaching, and they love to teach. My major is Environmental Resources Engineering, which I have found to be an excellent program.
The people here are some of the nicest I have met, both on campus and in town. Students will readily accept you, and there is not a \”seperate group” mentality that there was in high school. In town, if you cannot find something at one store, the clerk will tell you about other stores nearby that might have it and will even go outside to point out directions.
One thing that I don’t like about Humboldt is the rain. It rains frequently in the winter, and there is a lack of covered walkways on campus. I just carry an umbrella or raincoat in my backpack wherever I go, and the rain does not bother me. It certainly helps me appreciate the great sunny days.
Humboldt is a college of choice, not convenience. It is a long drive from most big cities, but that also means that everyone who comes here really wants to be here. If you are looking at colleges I strongly recommend that you check out Humboldt State.
