We switched to Allstate Insurance when my mother-in-law became an agent in Hendersonville, North Carolina in 1999. Their rates were comparable to Nationwide, for us at the time so we agreed to switch companies. One day when I was the office, I learned that Allstate had started checking the credit ratings of anyone applying for insurance with their company. That would not bother me, but I found out they increased the rates on customers with low credit scores. Now if they were basing rates on whether you have a bad driving record I could understand it. However, to base it on credit to me did not seem fair. After all some people have had bad luck their life or made some poor choices, so their credit might not be great. That doesn’t mean they should have to pay more for insurance than a person who has multiple tickets or wrecks just because that person has a good credit rating. After all, some people are just fortunate enough to be born to a family with money but that doesn’t make them a safer driver.
