Happy Town on ABCItem: Happy Town on ABC
I am a total TV addict, so I was excited when I saw the previews for a new mystery/drama on ABC, ironically called “Happy Town.” The previews touted the show to be about a small Midwestern town with a deep, dark secret. I figured this kind of show would be just my cup of tea, so of course, I found it on the internet and watched it the day after it aired.
The first thing I noticed was the that overall feel of the show was, simply, unoriginal. There didn’t seem to be a new story in the plot; to me, the show seemed like a Lifetime movie split into several episodes. Let me give you the basic plot, and then you can decide for yourself. A very cute girl moves into “Happy Town” by herself. We don’t know much about her, but she mysteriously comes on the scene and moves into a creepy boarding house which is home to several catty old women, one older man (played by Sam Neil), and a bossy house manager who (for unexplained reasons) doesn’t allow anyone to go upstairs to the third floor. The new girl discovers that several people from the town have gone missing over the years, and there is a murder on the frozen lake the very night before she moves into town. She acts surprised to learn about the murder and the missing town’s people, but at the end of the episode there are things that lead us to believe she knows more than she is letting on. Let me tell you, there is nothing unpredictable or exciting about this show. Everything revealed in the season premier seems vaguely familiar and underwhelming. Unless there is nothing else on TV, don’t bother trying to get into this show. It is anticlimactic, a non-mystery mystery. Rating: 4
